Schriever, LA – Richard Vizier Dies in Motorcycle Accident on W. Main St

April 20, 2024

Schriever, LA (September 12, 2021) – On Saturday, September 11th, at about 11:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police were notified of a two-vehicle collision with serious injuries at the intersection of West Main Street and LA-311 in Terrebonne Parish.

48-year-old Richard Vizier, a resident of Thibodaux, was killed during the accident.

An investigation concluded that Austin Wernich, a resident of Schriever, had been driving westbound on LA-311 in a 2010 Dodge Nitro. As he neared the intersection of West Main Street, he came to a controlled stop at a stop sign.

Vizier, who was riding on a 2020 Harley-Davidson Street Glide, was heading southbound on West Main Street in the lefthand lane. Wernich failed to yield the right-of-way and started to enter the intersection, pulling directly into the path of the Harley-Davidson. This caused the motorcycle to strike Wernich’s vehicle, ejecting Vizier from the bike.

Even though Vizier was wearing a DOT-approved helmet, he sustained serious injuries during the impact. He was transported by Acadian Ambulance to Thibodaux Regional Medical Center where he later passed away.

Wernich, who was buckled up at the time of the accident, was unharmed during the crash. ,

A toxicology sample was obtained from Vizier and handed over for analysis.

Wernich gave a voluntary breath sample. No alcohol was detected.

This accident is under investigation by the Louisiana State Police.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim, Mr. Richard Vizier, at this time.

Fatal Motorcycle Accidents in Schriever

Schriever, LA - Richard Vizier Dies in Motorcycle Accident on W. Main St

Fatal collisions are a grim reality faced by motorcyclists far more frequently than the occupants of other motor vehicles. While only 4% of all registered vehicles in Louisiana are motorcycles, the state’s Office of Motor Vehicles has recorded that more than 40 fatal Louisiana motorcycle accidents took place in 2017.

Severe injuries, like traumatic brain injury or even wrongful death, are often the result of motorcycle accidents, especially when the collision involves another vehicle. This is because motorcycles do not provide any of the safety features that occupants of a passenger vehicle often take for granted, such as seat belts, a roll cage, and airbags, leaving riders susceptible to enduring severe internal injuries, as well as injuries to their spinal cord and brain.

These life-altering injuries can cost several thousand dollars in medical expenses that cause the rider and their family to suffer an economic hardship from which they may never recover.
