Clay, LA – Three Teens Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash on Works Rd

April 16, 2024

Clay, LA (July 27, 2021) – On Monday, July 26th, at about 3:45 p.m., troopers from the Louisiana State Police were called to the scene of a fatal single-vehicle accident on Works Road in the area of State Highway 818 in Lincoln Parish.

Three teenagers died during the crash.

An initial investigation determined that a 2012 Kia Optima, driven by 19-year-old Lajermanique Nichols, a resident of Jonesboro, was heading eastbound on Works Road when, for reasons that have yet to be determined, the vehicle began to spin. This caused it to leave the paved portion of the roadway where it crashed into a large tree.

Nichols was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other passengers inside the vehicle, a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old, also residents of Jonesboro, were also thrown out of the vehicle. Both teenagers were pronounced dead at the scene.

A fourth occupant, who has since been identified as 18-year-old Edward Kary, was also ejected and received life-threatening injuries. He was transported by paramedics to a nearby hospital.

This accident is under investigation. Per protocol, toxicology samples were obtained from all four victims and will be submitted for analysis.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the families of the deceased victims at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and his family in hopes of a full recovery.

According to Louisiana law, the family of passengers who are killed during bus, truck, motorcycle, and car accidents could be entitled to financial recovery. It is important that surviving family members hire an attorney who is familiar with the most efficient ways to successfully pursue all appropriate and available sources of economic compensation.

The surviving family members of a deceased or injured passenger are permitted to bring a claim against the driver of the vehicle. According to Louisiana driving law, a vehicle’s passenger cannot be statutorily liable for the negligent behavior that resulted in the accident. For example, if the driver is acting recklessly by texting or watching videos while their passenger is asleep, and the driver’s inattention results in an accident, the passenger’s family is most likely entitled to file a claim and seek financial compensation against the driver.

When someone is hurt in an accident due to another’s negligence, they will have legal avenues open to them. By seeking the legal counsel of a Louisiana personal injury attorney, victims can learn about the various legal avenues they may wish to pursue.
