Evangeline Parish, LA – Luke A Fontenot Dies in Crash on St. Landry Hwy

April 26, 2024

Evangeline Parish, LA (September 07, 2021) – On Tuesday, September 7th, at about 8:00 a.m., the Louisiana State Police Troop responded to a fatal, two-vehicle collision on St. Landry Highway in the area of Paradise Lane in Evangeline Parish.

The deceased has been identified as 19-year-old Luke A. Fontenot, a resident of Oakdale.

An investigation revealed that Fontenot was driving eastbound on St. Landry Highway in a 2013 Nissan Rogue. At the same time, a 2006 International tractor-trailer towing a logging trailer backed out of a worksite on the northbound side of the highway.

Fontenot’s Nissan crashed into the tractor-trailer’s passenger side diesel tank in the eastbound lane causing both vehicles to become engulfed in flames.

Fontenot was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries and declined medical treatment. He showed no signs of impairment and a breath sample indicated no alcohol present.

This accident is under investigation.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim, Mr. Luke A. Fontenot, at this time.

Fatal Tractor-Trailer Accidents in Evangeline Parish

Evangeline Parish, LA - Luke A, Fontenot Dies in Crash on St. Landry Hwy

Even though any traffic collision could potentially be catastrophic, collisions including tractor-trailers or any other oversized truck are much more likely to end badly. Oversized trucks, like 18-wheelers, sanitation trucks, tanker trucks, and flatbed trucks normally weigh well over 80,000 pounds, approximately 40 tons, which is enough in itself to make them very dangerous.

Along with their weight, these big trucks are troublesome to steer and, in addition to that, some of them are hauling dangerous cargo. For these reasons, truck operators, their crew, and their parent companies have precautionary measures they are legally obligated to take. Should the truck operator or the trucking company be even the tiniest bit negligent, it could cause a serious or even fatal accident.
