Pedestrian Fatalities in Orleans Parish
Almost 70% of pedestrian fatalities take place at night. Although drivers are supposed to be aware of their surroundings, this is rarely the case. This means pedestrians need to stay vigilant while walking near a roadway.
Basic precautions like wearing reflective clothing, staying alert, not walking too close to the street, and walking against the flow of traffic can help you avoid being hit by a distracted or speeding motorist.
Daily, pedestrians in Louisiana are hit by cars and trucks and endure serious injuries while they are simply taking a walk, crossing the street, going for a jog, and just waiting or walking by the side of the road. Pedestrians face a considerably heightened threat of being injured than the occupant of any vehicle.
