Caddo Parish, LA – Sheriff’s Auxiliary Deputy Lonnie Thacker Killed in Crash on I-49

April 27, 2024

Caddo Parish, LA (July 23, 2021) – On Friday, July 23rd, at about 12:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troopers were called to investigate a fatal two-vehicle collision in the northbound lanes of Interstate 49, in the area of LA Highway 170.

The victim has since been identified as 82-year-old Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Auxiliary Deputy Lonnie Thacker, a resident of Keithville, who was hit by an alleged distracted driver.

A preliminary investigation determined that the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office was investigating a previous accident that involved a northbound lane closure on Interstate 49. Thacker was sitting in a parked, fully marked CPSO 2010 Chevrolet Impala that was located in the righthand lane with its emergency lights on for added visibility, for the purposes of traffic control.

In the meantime, a 2021 Kia Seltos, driven by 21-year-old Madison Campbell, a resident of Ida, was driving on I-49 northbound, nearing the lane closure. Campbell failed to notice the marked car, which was obstructing the lane, and crashed into the back of the CPSO vehicle, causing both vehicles to leave the roadway.

Campbell was restrained at the time of the collision. She was taken by paramedics to an area medical facility where she received treatment for injuries classified as non-life-threatening.

Thacker sustained fatal injuries during the impact and died at the scene.

Impairment is not believed to be a factor in this accident, however, routine toxicology samples were obtained and turned in for analysis.

This accident remains under investigation.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim, Mr. Lonnie Thacker, at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and her family in hopes of a full recovery.
