Lacombe, LA – Bicyclist Fatally Struck by DUI Near N. Tranquility Rd
Lacombe, LA (July 25, 2021) – On Saturday, July 24th, at about 8:15 p.m., Louisiana State Police were called to investigate a fatal crash involving a bicycle rider on US 190 in the area of North Tranquility Road in St. Tammany Parish.
The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending proper notification of next of kin.
Their investigation determined that a bicyclist was riding westbound along US 190 when a 2021 Kia K5, driven by Andre Damiens III of Lacombe, was driving westbound. For reasons that have yet to be determined, the Kia K5 hit the person on the bicycle. After striking the bicyclist, Damiens fled the scene.
Troopers were able to identify Damiens as the hit-and-run driver during the course of their investigation.
The bicyclist sustained fatal injuries during the crash and was pronounced dead on the scene.
As part of their investigation, a toxicology sample was collected from the deceased for laboratory analysis.
After troopers located Damiens, he was arrested and transported to a nearby facility where he was made to provide a breath sample that tested well over the legal limit. Following the breath test, Troopers booked Damiens into the St. Tammany Parish Jail for violating LRS 14:32.1 Vehicular Homicide, LRS 14:100 Hit and Run, and LRS 32:58 Careless Operation.
This crash remains under investigation.
