Calcasieu Parish, LA – Fatal Tractor-Trailer Accident on I-10 Near Hwy 397

May 26, 2024

Calcasieu Parish, LA (July 31, 2021) – On Friday, July 30th, at about 4:15 p.m., troopers from the Louisiana State Police responded to reports of a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 10 about a mile east of State Highway 397 in Calcasieu Parish.

One driver was killed during the accident. Their identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

An investigation determined that the driver of the BMW was heading westbound on I-10 in the outside lane of travel, possibly at a lower rate of speed than the flow of traffic. The driver of a 2012 Freightliner tractor-trailer was traveling in the same direction, also in the outside lane of I-10 behind several other vehicles and overtaking the slower-moving BMW.

The drivers of the other, smaller vehicles managed to take evasive actions and maneuver around the BMW. The driver of the tractor-trailer, however, was not able to circumvent the BMW and hit the back of it, causing both vehicles to leave the righthand side of the roadway. After they exited the interstate, both vehicles crashed into several trees before coming to a stop.

The driver of the BMW was fatally injured and died at the scene.

The passenger in the BMW received life-threatening injuries and was taken by Acadian Air Med to a hospital in Lafayette. Whether or not the driver and passenger in the BMW were properly restrained is unknown due to the severity of the accident.

The driver of the tractor-trailer was moderately injured.

Toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and turned in for analysis.

This crash remains under investigation.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their families in hopes of a full recovery.

Fatal Tractor-Trailer Accidents in Calcasieu Parish

7.31 Calcasieu Parish, LA - Fatal Tractor-Trailer Accident on I-10 Near Hwy 397

Even though any traffic collision could potentially be catastrophic, collisions including tractor-trailers or any other oversized truck are much more likely to end badly. Oversized trucks, like 18-wheelers, sanitation trucks, tanker trucks, and flatbed trucks normally weigh well over 80,000 pounds, approximately 40 tons, which is enough in itself to make them very dangerous.

Along with their weight, these big trucks are troublesome to steer and, in addition to that, some of them are hauling dangerous cargo. For these reasons, truck operators, their crew, and their parent companies have precautionary measures they are legally obligated to take. Should the truck operator or the trucking company be even the tiniest bit negligent, it could cause a serious or even fatal accident.

If someone sustains an injury in an accident because of another driver’s negligence, they will have legal avenues of action available to them. By seeking the legal counsel of a Louisiana personal injury attorney, victims can learn about the various legal avenues they may wish to pursue.
