Gonzales, LA – Jasy Hunt Dies in Wreck on Coon Trap Rd

May 7, 2024

Ascension Parish, LA (August 02, 2021) – At about 11:30 a.m. on Monday, August 2nd, troopers from the Louisiana State Police were called to investigate a deadly two-vehicle collision on Coon Trap Road in the area of State Highway 74 in Ascension Parish.

The victim has since been identified as 35-year-old Jasy Hunt, a resident of Gonzales.

The investigation showed that the accident took place when 26-year-old Levi Mitchell, a resident of Prairieville, was driving northbound on Coon Trap Road in a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe in which Hunt was the front seat passenger. At the same time, a 2017 Freightliner box truck was heading southbound on the same stretch of road.  For reasons that have yet to be determined, Mitchell crossed over the centerline, causing the Hyundai to crash head-first into the box truck.

After colliding with the Freightliner, Mitchell exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

Hunt sustained fatal injuries during the accident and died at the scene.

The operator of the Freightliner was properly restrained and sustained non-critical injuries. He was transported by paramedics to a nearby hospital for treatment.

As part of the ongoing investigation, a toxicology sample was obtained from the driver of the Freightliner for analysis.

Mitchell was unrestrained at the time of the crash and remains at large. State Troopers, in coordination with the Louisiana State Police Fugitive Apprehension Unit, are currently searching for Mitchell, who is wanted for multiple felony warrants.

We would like to offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim, Mrs. Jasy Hunt, at this time. Our thoughts are with the injured victim and his family in hopes of a full recovery.
