New Iberia, LA – Three Firefighters Injured in Explosion on Hopkins St
New Iberia, LA (August 01, 2021) – Three firefighters were hospitalized on Thursday, July 29th after sustaining injuries when a gas leak caused a building to explode n a neighborhood in New Iberia.
The accident took place near the intersection of Dale Street and Hopkins Street. when a plumbing business was burned to the ground.
Neighbors in the area were forced to evacuate their homes as they noticed the smell of gas and began hearing explosions. Firefighters hurried them to the other side of the street and, when they turned around, they saw their neighborβs plumbing business engulfed in flames that were at least 30 feet high.
As they were trying to escape danger, however, firefighters were heading towards it to extinguish the fire.Β
Officials say the explosion injured three firefighters at the scene. All three are in local hospital burn units for medical treatment of fire-related injuries.
